Discussion of
Miami River
Marine Industries Symposium - Ms. Megan Kelly provided
the revised “Project Initiative for the Miami River Marine Industries
Symposium” (see attached). Dr.
Fran Bohnsack, Miami River Marine Group (MRMG) suggested for the lunch
speaker to be the City of Miami Mayor, Manuel A. Diaz. The EDC
subcommittee identified potential experts for the break out session.
The registration fee is being considered at $75.00 with an
additional $20.00 for riverboat tours.
Dr. Bohnsack suggested that attendees be provided with materials
they can take-away from the symposium.
Dr. Bohnsack stated the Miami River Marine Group would consider
sponsoring the closing reception. Ms.
Adriana Cabrera thanked Dr. Bohnsack for providing a copy of the list of
the delegations accredited to the Organization of American States and
the Secure Port 2004 Conference and Workshop participant list.
An updated list of possible advertisers for the symposium was
provided. Ms. Kelly
requested staff to forward the revised project initiative to Dr. Pamela
Dana, Director, Office of Tourism, & Economic Development.
The EDC
confirmed their next regularly scheduled second Tuesday of the month
meeting on Tuesday, April 13, 2004, 2:30, University of Miami Rosenstiel
School, 4600 Rickenbacker Causeway, Miami, FL

Description
of the Project:
A
tightly programmed day-long symposium to analyze and document the
present economic feasibility and conditions for future success of the
marine industries of the Miami River and to utilize industry and
academic expertise to create a targeted economic development plan to
attract and enhance the marine industries on the Miami River, in concert
with such major initiatives as dredging, FTAA, Homeland Security and
other federal, state and local programs.
Background:
A
comprehensive Miami River Corridor Urban Infill Plan, created under a
Joint Planning agreement between the City of
Miami
and
Miami-Dade
County
, targets the portions of
the river corridor for marine industrial economic development.
The
Upper
River
defined in the Infill Plan
as west of
22nd Avenue
is indicated for targeted
effort to enhance and expand water-dependent businesses on the
Miami River
.
Rationale
for Project: Gather
a panel of top experts in marine industry economics, business operators
in cargo handling, shipping, chandlery, boat yards, boat building,
marinas, port operations managers, maritime-based economic development,
for a concentrated, results oriented discussion of the
Miami River
marine industry.
Specific outcomes: Characterize current and potential economic
impacts of
Miami River
marine businesses.
Determine current and future feasibility of primary components of marine
trade on the river. Identify
potential growth segments of marine industry suitable for
Miami River
.
Adapt the charette format popular in urban design to create
actionable project(s) to attract new marine business and enhance
viability of existing marine business on the
Miami River
.
